Early numbers show LRNRD irrigators didn't water as much as expected

ALMA — According to preliminary metering data, irrigators in the Lower Republican Natural Resources District applied much less groundwater to their crops last summer than officials had expected.

In a report to the district's board of directors here Thursday, General Manager Mike Clements said that based on meters read so far this fall, the average usage per certified irrigated acre districtwide will be "way, way better" than anticipated.

"We're looking at just under 7 inches right now for the district on average," Clements told the board at its regular November meeting in Alma. "I about fell off my chair."
