Gentry St. Cyr, a member of the Many Moccasins Dance
Troupe from Winnebago, dances for students at the
Native American Festival Thursday morning at Hastings
Museum.
More than 600 students and volunteers from area schools in grades K-8 were given a glimpse of Native American customs and traditions at the Native American Festival this morning at Hastings Museum.
The event, which also was open to the public, included appearances by Many Moccasins Dance Troupe from Winnebago, story telling by Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones of the Kiowa/Otoe Missouria Indian tribe, displays of Indian art and culture, and hands-on learning opportunities to crack codes, color, and other interactive activities.
Museum director Becky Matticks said the festival has become a favorite of local students. Now in its sixth year here, it gives students an opportunity to get up close and personal with a culture that to many of them exists only in textbooks.
