Like mother, like daughter

St. Cecilia volleyball moms Amy Hamburger (left) and Kelly
Nikkila exchange an excited high-five during the last of
three winning sets that secured the Hawkettes' win over
Palmyra in their second-round match of the Class C-2 state
tournament at Grand Island Senior High Friday. Both
Hamburger and Nikkila were state championship players for
the Hawkette volleyball team in 1982 and 1983.

GRAND ISLAND — They now refer to it as “old school ball.”

The St. Cecilia volleyball team saw its court dynamics and perseverance pay off in the form of back-to-back championship trophies at the 1982 and 1983 state tournaments in Lincoln.

Teammates Kelly (Farmer) Nikkila and Amy (Sass) Hamburger are among those who remember the thrill of those title wins.

“To have back-to-back wins was incredible,” Hamburger said. “It was such an exciting time to play.”

Flash forward to this week — 30 years later.

Hamburger and Nikkila are now the proud parents of two Hawkette volleyball players — junior Clare Hamburger and senior Morgan Nikkila — who themselves have had an exciting series of trips to the state tournament, making it to the semifinals for the third consecutive year.
