The Lower Republican Natural Resources District and another NRD in the Republican River Basin likely will need additional water conservation steps to keep Nebraska in compliance with an interstate compact for 2013.
The news, announced Friday by the state Department of Natural Resources, had been widely anticipated in view of the drought experienced in the river basin this year.
At a meeting of the Nebraska Republican River Management Districts Association in Imperial, NDNR released its preliminary forecast for the year ahead. The forecast calls for 2013 to be a “Compact Call Year” —meaning the Lower and Upper Republican NRDs probably will need to take extra measures to eliminate projected negative balances in their consumptive use as it is compared to allowable groundwater depletions.
