EXETER — Hanging in the gym at Exeter-Milligan High School are three banners commemorating championships won by the girls volleyball team under head coach Darcy White.

White’s daughter, Claire, played on two of those teams. Until this year, her son, Nolan, who has started at quarterback for the varsity football team the last two seasons, could only watch and imagine what it would feel like to play in a state championship game. That’s because despite several playoff appearances, the football team has never played for a state title before.
