Celebration in session at Adoption Day

Jahiem Hamik, 3, claps after Judge Robert Ide declared him
officially adopted by Jeremy and Kim Hamik on National
Adoption Day Saturday at the Adams County Courthouse.

Every year, there comes a day when the Adams County Courthouse is filled with balloons, smiles and a cause for celebration.

For seven families, that day was Saturday.

It was the eighth annual Adoption Day event at the courthouse where seven adoptions were made official. The day is hosted by the 10th Judicial District County Courts, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates of South Central Nebraska and the Hastings Family YMCA.

“It’s a great day,” said County Judge Michael Offner, who helps coordinate the day and brings smiles to the faces of families who have endured through the lengthy adoption process. “It’s a celebration, it’s not a court date.”

Since 2008, 271 adoptions have been completed on Adoption Day in the district, 69 of those in Adams County.
