Like many of the dozens of volunteers who packed sack lunches for the Open Table program Wednesday at Hastings College’s Hazelrigg Student Union, Grant Hunter made time for the project after lunch.
“So I ate lunch around 11 a.m.,” the Hastings College senior said over the din of rustling paper sacks. “I stopped by and knew this was happening today and wanted to help. It’s a good cause, and I gave 30 minutes of my time.”
From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., students filled more than 2,600 sacks each with a granola bar, fruit snack and piece of candy. The event marked the end of the annual HC Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month and came a day after students made just as many peanut butter and jelly, turkey or ham sandwiches that eventually will also go into those paper sacks.
