Black Friday sales usher in holiday shopping season

Black Friday shoppers wait outside Allen's Superstore
as the doors are opened Friday morning.

What began with about a dozen people standing in line quickly became a steady flow approaching 100 customers at Allen’s Supermarket at 7 a.m. this morning during its annual Black Friday “Almost Christmas” shopping event.

Most Customers looking to avoid standing outside in 20-degree temperatures stayed in their cars until the last possible second waiting for the doors to open. A few diehards began lining up at the front door just a few short minutes from the start of the sale. By 7:20 a.m., there were customers beginning to line up to check out, treasures secured.

“It’s going well,” said Bryant Allen, general manager and part-owner of the store. “Greg (Tjarks, manager) just told me he counted 65 cars on the lot, which is not bad for 7 a.m. It’s looking good so far.”

Regarded by many retailers as the most important shopping day of the year, Black Friday sales began in full force as early as Thanksgiving Day locally in some instances.
