Council gives final approval to utility rate increases

Rates for electricity, water and sanitary sewer use will all increase in 2014 following the final approval Monday by the Hastings City Council.

Water rates will increase 12 percent, which will help compensate for nitrate and uranium treatment projects that will be conducted on the city's water wells to comply with purification standards.

Electric rates will increase 5 percent, the first increase in that category since 2008.
