Millions chase record $425M Powerball jackpot

Eight months after a trio of ticket buyers split a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot to set a world lottery record, Powerball is offering up a prize that would be the second-highest.

The $425 million jackpot, the largest in Powerball’s history, represents a potential life-changing fortune.

In Hastings, local retailers are reporting double and even triple sales on Powerball tickets this week. Both the usual crowd of Powerball diehards and occasional purchasers have taken that first important step to becoming a millionaire by purchasing a ticket ... or three ... or 10 ... or more.

Kevin Ellerbee, manager of Uncle Neal’s Country Store at 228 N. Burlington Ave., said this morning that customers are very aware of the record jackpot that’s on the line this drawing.

“We get some new people once in a while — a variety of people go around to different stores to get them at different places — but so far, it’s just kind of the regular crowd,” Ellerbee said. “Everyone’s just like, ‘I can’t believe how high it is,’ and ‘There’s no way you’d be able to spend that much.’ "
