Hornets top Raiders in first-round showdown

Lawrence-Nelson's Dillon Menke is tackled by Giltner's Dillon

Giltner.

GILTNER — Most knew the Giltner vs. Lawrence-Nelson football game wasn't going to be a typical No. 6 vs. No. 11 seed matchup. But Thursday's game lived up to the hype.

It took a second-half comeback, but the defending state champion Hornets knocked off the Raiders 28-26 in the first round of the Class D-2 playoffs.

"We knew coming in this was going to be one heck of a game. We told the boys, 'This should be a semifinals game,' " said Giltner head coach Jeff Ashby. "Our goal is to be state champions, and you have to beat them all, anyway. That's kind of the attitude we took. … Lawrence-Nelson is a team that deserves to be further than where they ended."
