Giltner sweeps Mead

MILFORD — With a wild-card berth to next week’s state tournament likely already locked up, the Giltner volleyball team made sure it didn’t have to rely on a wild card.

The Hornets swept Mead 25-16, 25-21, 25-23 in the Class D-2, District 1 final to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Grand Island. It was Giltner’s 17th straight win and avenged a loss to Mead, the last team to beat the Hornets back on Sept. 22.

Giltner (28-2) unofficially will be the No. 3 seed and will open state tournament play Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Island Central Catholic. Mead (26-4) also qualified for state via a wild card and unofficially will be the No. 1 seed. The official bracket for the state tournament will be announced Saturday.

Thursday’s win was extra special for Giltner and its head coach, as Kurt Polt picked up his 200th career win.
