AURORA — The Fillmore Central volleyball team came within one match of reaching its first-ever state tournament, but fell just short.

The Panthers tried to mount a comeback Friday night in the Class C-1, District 3 championship match, highlighted by a thrilling 27-25 third-set victory, but that was all Fillmore Central took from Grand Island Central Catholic in a 25-23, 25-17, 25-27, 25-14 loss. Fillmore Central head coach Michelle Evans said the most crucial set was the first one.

"We needed to get that first set. I'm sure it would have gone to five and been a close one. Who knows?" said Evans, whose squad ended the season 24-9. "Both teams played hard. When we could keep GICC out of system, that helped us a lot. It seemed like when our girls were swinging, we went up and down. And when we lose confidence, we stop swinging. ... They served really tough. Give them credit, they did a great job."
