St. Cecilia players celebrate their Class C-2, District 5
championship Friday in Grand Island.
GRAND ISLAND — Before the Class C-2, District 5 final was set, St. Cecilia knew that it had already earned a trip to the state tournament next week.
But this is a team that wants to prove itself, and the Hawkettes did that by avoiding a letdown in a 25-22, 25-13, 25-13 sweep of Wood River Friday night at Grand Island Senior High.
"You always want to win and carry some momentum. So I thought our kids played very well," STC head coach Alan VanCura said. "We beat a good Wood River team. They've got an excellent ball club. We played them earlier in the season and we struggled. They played well against us. It's nice to see our kids come out after a shaky first (set) and take control."
St. Cecilia (29-3) unofficially will be the No. 2 seed in the Class C-2 state tournament and will take on seventh-seeded Thayer Central on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grand Island Northwest.
