Titans sweep Aquinas to win district title

FRIEND — Thayer Central swept Aquinas Catholic 26-24, 25-18, 25-12 in the Class C-2, District 3 final Friday to secure a spot in the state tournament.

The Titans unofficially will be the No. 7 seed and will take on St. Cecilia in the opening round Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grand Island Northwest. It will be the first trip to state since 2010 when Thayer Central finished third in Class C-1.

Titan head coach Kurk Wiedel said that nabbing the first set was huge for the rest of the match.

"We really survived that first game. We were ahead 24-20 and then Aquinas pulled back even," he said. "Winning that game was critical because it kept the momentum going, and it kept them on their heels."
