Hastings College's Kelsey Nealon battles Morningside's Hope
Forman for control of the ball during their second round
game of the GPAC tournament Saturday at Lloyd Wilson
Field.
For the third consecutive season, the Hastings College women’s soccer team is back in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament championship game.
That’s something that might have been an afterthought when the Broncos (12-6-1) started the 2012 season on an 0-6 slide under new head coach Mark Hiemenz.
But under the lights of Lloyd Wilson Field Saturday night, HC earned a 3-0 win over Morningside — the only team GPAC team Hastings did not beat during the regular season, as that game ended in a scoreless tie — in the GPAC semifinals. The Broncos will host rival Doane Thursday at 7 p.m. for the conference crown. Doane got by Midland 2-1 in its semifinal match.
What a turnaround it’s been for the Broncos.
“I think we’ve been motivated to play (Morningside). We played them to a 0-0 draw last time, and they’re a good team that is well-coached. They’re tough to play against,” Hiemenz said.
