Over the previous two seasons, there’s been a change in the level of play from the Giltner volleyball team. In 2011, the Hornets doubled their win total from the season before, going 20-7 and reaching the first round of the state tournament.
Giltner was the No. 7 seed in last season’s state tourney and was playing in the program’s second state tournament since 1999. The Hornets fell to second-seeded Bertrand, which was the eventual runner-up, in four sets. Giltner is back at the state tournament this year and is looking to use that experience to make a run.
The Hornets bettered last season’s record by eight wins, going 28-2, and claimed the third seed in the Class D-2 state tournament — opening with sixth-seeded Stuart on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Island Central Catholic. Their only losses were to top-seeded Mead (26-4), which Giltner came back to beat in last week’s district final, and Class D-1 Exeter-Milligan (27-4), which is seeded No. 6 in the D-1 state tournament.
