Tuesday’s quarterfinal matchup between unbeatens Adams Central and Kearney Catholic was one of the more anticipated contests of the season.

And it did not disappoint.

The two teams battled to a first half tie at 7-all, but then the Adams Central defense — like so many times this season — came up big for the Patriots, forcing five Kearney Catholic turnovers and scoring a touchdown in a 28-7 AC victory.

“There was two great teams out there tonight,” AC coach Bill Carlin said. “This was a sad day that two teams of this caliber had to meet this early. They’re both great teams, and Kearney Catholic has nothing to hang its head about.”

With the win, the Patriots (11-0) advance to the semifinals for the second straight year — last year in Class B and this year in C-1. Adams Central, the second seed in the West bracket of the C-1 playoffs, will play at top-seeded Boone Central/Newman Grove (10-1) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Albion.
