BDS makes first state appearance

BDS middle hitter Jill Schroeder (5) hits the ball through the
block of Friend defender Taylor Menke (6) in set three of the
Class D-1, District 1 championship Thursday night at Geneva.

GENEVA — Four years ago, Bruning-Davenport/Shickley volleyball coach Dan Sorge told his team it had big things in store for it.

Now, the first class of seniors to be a part of Bruning-Davenport/Shickley for all four years, since the schools joined forces in sports, is heading to state for the first time in the program's history.

BDS had to come back to beat Friend in five sets, winning 16-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 15-12 to take home the Class D-1, District 1 championship.

"I knew it was going to be a tough match. (Friend is) very athletic," Sorge said.
