GRAND ISLAND — Looking to reach the Class D-1 state championship match for the fourth consecutive year, the Exeter-Milligan volleyball team needed an upset in the first round to keep that quest alive.

The sixth-seeded Timberwolves did just that this morning at Grand Island Central Catholic, knocking off No. 3 seed Howells-Dodge in a heart-stopping five-set thriller 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 19-17.

“There’s two great teams out there on the court today. Obviously, it could’ve gone either way and that is what was going through my head. I was just hoping I’d have somebody step up at a critical time,” E-M head coach Darcy White said. “That’s our first five-set match all year. I hate to start out the state tournament with five sets, but hopefully we can get our legs under us because all 10 of my girls played today and it wasn’t easy.”

Exeter-Milligan advances to the 6:30 p.m. semifinal match Friday at Grand Island Senior High.
