Red Cloud falls short in state bid

GIBBON — Red Cloud was hoping to do something the school had never accomplished before, and that's qualifying for the state volleyball tournament for the first time in school history. 

Instead, Cross County (16-16) punched its ticket to the state tournament in Grand Island next week with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-27, 25-16 victory over Red Cloud (13-15) in the Class D-1 district 3 final. 

"We were hoping to write some history tonight," Red Cloud Head Coach Brooke Lewis said. "The seniors were very disappointed. But when we focused on the positive things they've done for this program in their four years, we could smile a little bit.
