GRAND ISLAND — What a ride.

The Exeter-Milligan volleyball team had to overcome a tough schedule and subdistrict tournament to reach the state tournament. Then the state tournament was as brutal as it gets.

But that didn’t deter the sixth-seeded Timberwolves (30-4) from capturing their third Class D-1 state championship in four seasons with a 25-20, 15-25, 25-13, 25-20 win over No. 1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic (30-5) at the Heartland Events Center Saturday night.

The win caps an incredible journey for a group of four seniors who have been apart of it all. Taylor Erdkamp, Jackie Luzum, Megan Zwickl and Jennifer Pribyl can now boast a career record of 122-12 along with three state championships and a runner-up finish. Senior Malinda Hall joined the fun this season, as she transferred from York.

“I can’t believe it’s over,” Luzum said. “Winning my senior year is so much better. The other years were great, but this year we had to work so hard to get here. We’re the leaders on this team, and it just means so much.”
