GRAND ISLAND — St. Cecilia hoisted a trophy Saturday at the Class C-2 volleyball tournament — it just wasn’t the one it targeted.
But that doesn’t diminish the performance the No. 2-seeded Hawkettes put in the third-place match against top-seeded North Platte St. Patrick’s.
STC (31-4) overcame slow starts and survived two set points for the Irish (30-3) in a 28-26, 25-18, 27-25 sweep at Grand Island Senior High.
It couldn’t have been a more representative season finale for the team — the Hawkettes often have found a way to come back when they’re down.
“The big key was that we were resilient. We were behind in every game we’ve played here and the girls found a way to bounce back,” said head coach Alan VanCura. “Especially our seniors, they didn’t want it to end their careers on a loss. They just some how found a way to win.”
