E-M edges BDS to punch ticket to Lincoln

Exeter-Milligan's Kyle Jensen dives into the end zone as he
is pulled down by Bruning-Davenport/Shickley's Nathan
Hendrickson in the first quarter of their Class D-1 semifinal
game Monday night in Bruning.

BRUNING — Bruning-Davenport/ Shickley was driving with a 20-16 lead in the late stages of the fourth quarter.

But the Eagles turned the ball over on downs, giving rival Exeter-Milligan two minutes, 26 seconds to keep its hopes of playing in Memorial Stadium alive. But the Timberwolves had a ways to go.

Just two plays later, though, junior quarterback James Sluka heaved all of his 5-foot-8, 150-pound body into a deep ball that found sophomore Kyle Jensen down the sideline for a 56-yard touchdown that would end up being the clincher, as sixth-seeded E-M knocked off No. 4-seeded BDS 24-20 in the Class D-1 semifinals on a frigid Monday night in Bruning.

The Timberwolves (12-0) advance to the Class D-1 championship Monday at 2:45 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, where they will face Elgin Public/Pope John (12-0). The game will be televised statewide by Nebraska Educational Television.
