The Hastings College men’s soccer team is heading to its fifth consecutive national tournament, but this one is a little different than the trips of recent memory. This time, the Broncos are the underdog.
Head coach Chris Kranjc said his team is embracing the role reversal. Instead of trying to avoid an upset in the first round, HC is trying to cause one.
“We are the underdogs in this game. This is the first time in quite a while where I don't think the expectation nationally is that we are going to win the game,” Kranjc said. “We are kind of in one of those positions where we like it. We feel like we have something to prove. Rather than other teams trying to knock us off, we are trying to knock off one of the top-seeded teams.”
That team is Oklahoma Wesleyan, which is undefeated, seeded No. 9 and ranked third in the nation. The Eagles score the most goals per game in the nation and have four players who have scored double-digit goals; for comparison sake, Jordan Green is the only Bronco in double digits with 26 goals. In other words, Hastings College has a tall order in the first round.
