STC moves on to state finals

St. Cecilia's Shandra Farmer reacts to the Hawkettes' win
over Palmyra in the second-round Class C-2 match at the
state tournament Friday in Grand Island.

GRAND ISLAND — In the recent past, Fridays at the Nebraska volleyball state tournament have been nightmarish for the St. Cecilia volleyball team.

In 2011, an intense five-set loss to Ord sent the Hawkettes to the third-place match. A year ago, Hartington Cedar Catholic did the same thing in three sets.

This year, the Hawkettes and their coaches really didn't want to be back in the consolation match. And that desire showed as No. 2 St. Cecilia (27-8) controlled No. 6 Palmyra (26-5) in a 25-14, 25-19, 25-11 sweep at Grand Island Senior High.

"There were only three of us on the team now who have played in the last two semifinals matches. The girls on the team wanted to do this for us, because they knew how much it has sucked to play in that consolation game," said senior Morgan Nikkila. "We just all wanted to get to the championship."

The win sends the Hawkettes to the state final match for the first time in 23 years.
