GRAND ISLAND — Five years ago, the Giltner volleyball team was at the top of Class D-1, winning the state championship. Now, the Hornets are one win away from another title.
Second-seeded Giltner beat Sterling in a five-set slugfest, winning 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12 on Friday at Grand Island Senior High. The Hornets’ coach Kurt Polt said his team didn’t play its best, but it was able to grind out the victory.
“I’ll give our girls credit because they didn’t play their best game today. I thought we served poorly and communicated poorly,” he said. “I guess they played well when they needed to. Maybe that’s the sign of a good team, when you don’t play your best but you still can come out with a win.”
