Hornets confident entering title game

Giltner players celebrate their win over Shelton during the
Class D-2 semifinal Monday at Shelton.

Over the last five seasons, the Giltner football team has been one of the top programs in 8-man football. The Hornets have a record of 53-6, including a state finals appearance in 2009.

But the last two seasons have been somewhat heartbreaking for Giltner, falling to Howells — the same team that beat the Hornets in the 2009 title game — in the semifinals in 2010 and the quarterfinals in 2011. In both years, the playoff loss was Giltner’s only falter of the season.

The Hornets find themselves back in the title game just three seasons after falling in the championship. Giltner will be taking the field with Humphrey St. Francis Flyers at 10:15 a.m. Monday in Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium. The year 2009 was also the last time the Flyers were in the state championship game. Humphrey St. Francis defeated Hayes Center 34-0 to seal a perfect 13-0 season and claim its third state championship.
