Hastings falls in five sets to open tourney

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The No. 8-ranked Hastings College opened pool play in the NAIA national tournament Tuesday night with a heartbreaking 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 15-13 loss to No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at the Tyson Event Center.

That puts the Broncos (28-5) into a must-win situation today against Bellevue University at 8 p.m. The No. 23 Bruins upset No. 5 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in five sets in the other match of Pool E.

“We need to win the next two to advance at this point. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it,” HC head coach Matt Buttermore said. “We win the next two — we have a good shot. We still have our fate in our hands.”

Hastings rallied to force a fifth set after dropping the first two sets to the Pioneers (26-4).
In the fifth set, HC seemed to have control with a 13-10 lead. But No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene grabbed the next five points to earn the upset.
