Shirley was born April 9, 1933, to Jesse DeWitt and Esther (Thompson) Hickman in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1951. She attended Hastings College and worked at Dutton Lainson Manufacturing Co. and at a Christian book store. After being employed at the Christian book store, Shirley and her friend Mary LaVeda Appling decided to move to California. They both lived there for about 25 years, sometimes in separate towns because of their job situations. After Mary retired and moved to Florida, Shirley decided that it seemed like a good idea and joined her in North Fort Myers. She was employed at Winn Dixie in North Fort Myers until her retirement.

She was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church where she was involved in a number of activities, among them the Sunday Morning Choir and “The Gospel According to Scrooge,” a Christmas Musical. She served on the decorating committee for Women of Faith. She moved back to Hastings in November 2019, because of ill health and was a resident of The Kensington at the time of her death.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; siblings and spouses, Gladys and Frank Woolsey, Ruby Hickman, Lois and Jimmie Morgan, Doris and James Scott, Lorraine Hickman, Ray Hickman, and Howard Hickman; nieces and nephews, Karen, Larry, David, Eva, Lori, Bob, Douglas, Brian, and Sarah Anne; and good friend Mary LaVeda Appling.

Survivors include brother and spouse, Gerald “Jerry” and Betty Jayne Hickman; sister-in-law, Rosalyn Hickman; nieces, nephews and spouses, Mary and Bill Warren, David and Robin Hickman, Ron and Susan Hickman, Terry and Cathy Hickman, Linda and Ken Hass, Kristi and Pat Mauldin, Cindy Scott, James Scott, Gary Scott, and Linda Morgan; many great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.

On behalf of Shirley, our family wishes to thank all the people at The Kensington and the personnel at Mary Lanning Healthcare for their wonderful care of Shirley. Also thanks to “Charlie” a very special therapy dog who made her days so joyful!
