For Judy Mignery of Hastings, civil service came as a way to spend more time with her family.
Before her appointment as Adams County Planning and Zoning director, she had been making more money working for an engineering firm in the private sector.
The downside was the time she spent away from home. She usually started driving to work in Grand Island at 6:30 in the morning and wouldn’t get home until after 6 p.m.
Mignery had a son in the third grade as well as a daughter who was in her 20s. Her work schedule precluded her from participating in many of her children’s activities.
“The stress of being away from home that much was getting to me,” she said. “I was not getting to see him grow up.”
