40 years ago: Press changed way Tribune put out paper

Retired Tribune employees Joyce Ore, Ben Ore, Don Wolf and
Roger Fowler share stories in front of the press at the
Tribune Tuesday September 25, 2012.
When the first newspapers came off of the new press in 1972, it started a new era at the Hastings Tribune.

That year, the Tribune building at 912 W. Second St. was completed and the new web offset press was turned on for the first time.

“I just remember how clean it was and it was just fascinating seeing the papers coming out,” said Joyce Ore. “I had never seen anything like it.”

Ore, a Tribune reporter from 1972 to 1982, recounted the first few times she saw the new press and press room that were shiny and clean.

“If you can call a machine pretty, it really was,” she said.

Ore and three other retired Tribune employees came together last week to share some of their memories from 40 years ago when the new press was installed. The Tribune also is celebrating its 107th year as a daily newspaper today. Readers will notice today’s banner shows Vol. 108 No. 1.
