Shutdown leads to uncertainty

With a government shutdown now in effect, some local federal employees are furloughed until Congress passes a budget, while others continue to work but are unsure for how long.

A call from the Hastings Tribune made this morning to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center west of Clay Center was referred to Sandy Miller Hayes, spokeswoman for the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, in Washington, D.C. Hayes answered her phone but said the USDA — or at least anyone who could do an interview — was essentially shut down, including herself.

“In fact, I’m not even here right now,” she said.
