He was not the big and burly type generally chosen to do police work, but Steven Murphy didn't let that stop him from applying to join the Hastings Police Department 40 years ago.
Murphy, 62, is now among the longest-serving officers in the department. Mayor Vern Powers recognized Murphy for 40 years of service during an Aug. 13 Hastings City Council meeting.
“It’s an interesting way to earn a living,” Murphy said. “It was a job where I could always be learning.”
