Faces of Sports: Perfect season may never be duplicated

The 1954 Hastings College football team wasn’t bigger, stronger or faster than most of its opponents. Where some of its opponents carried more than 100 players, the Broncos roster numbered less than 40 players, most of whom played on both sides of the ball.

And with no recent history of success, the team was picked by media outlets to finish sixth in its eight-team conference. And perhaps, in part because of that meager assessment, they rose above expectations to become only the second undefeated team in the program’s century-plus history with an unblemished 10-0 record. The 1923 team also had an undefeated season.
