Tournament in Illinois.

When the world’s best golfers teed up on the 18th hole at this year’s Ryder Cup last week in Medinah, Ill., they looked to Hastings resident Mike Atchity to keep the peace.

Atchity, 65, was among the select few chosen to work the tournament as marshals. He applied for consideration to volunteer in July 2011 while entering an online request for tournament tickets. As marshal, he would be responsible for manning four three to-four-hour shifts during the week-long tournament, which concluded Sunday.

“It was a positive experience,” he said. “The course was just beautiful. The greens were flawless."
