Homicide investigation in Guide Rock

GUIDE ROCK — Authorities are considering homicide in the death Saturday of an 68-year-old Guide Rock woman, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Virginia Barone of 335 Center St. was found dead in her home around 8 a.m. Saturday after the Webster’s County Sheriff’s Office was asked to conduct a welfare check, according to a state patrol news release.

A mother and son sought in connection to the investigation were arrested in Newton, Iowa, after being accused of mugging a woman Saturday at a parking lot there.

Shelley Casterline, 41, and Andrew Casterline, 23, both of Guide Rock, are being held in the Jasper County Jail in Iowa on robbery charges, according to The Associated Press.

The news release states that the Iowa charges are not directly related to the homicide investigation.

No charges have been filed against the two in Nebraska since Saturday.

The news release doesn’t provide any indication as to the relationship between Barone and the Casterlines, but, according to online court records, Barone had been assigned the balance of bond money from a 2012 theft case against Shelley.
