Wilkinson is the police chief in Litchfield, Ill.

Friendly and talkative, B.J. Wilkinson of Litchfield, Ill., believes police officers should be involved in their communities. Whether coaching a youth sport or sitting in pews next to citizens in church, he said officers need those connections.

“People need to know we’re real people and real neighbors and real moms and dads,” he said. “I think that’s important.”

Wilkinson, 50, is hoping to make Hastings his home as the city’s new police chief. He is among four candidates vying to fill the city’s vacant police chief position. He and his wife are looking to move to Nebraska to be closer to family.

Wilkinson is currently the police chief of Litchfield, a town with a population of 6,939.
