Former Fairfield city clerk faces theft charge

CLAY CENTER — Former Fairfield City Clerk Jennifer Bassett has pleaded innocent to charges of taking more than $100,000 from the city and using city funds to purchase everything from a cruise to spa supplies.

Bassett, 38, is charged in Clay County District Court with theft by unlawful taking or disposition and theft of more than $1,500 by deception, a Class 3 felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

She was arraigned Wednesday in the Clay County Courthouse.

She waived her right to a speedy trial. Her pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2014.
