Kortum sees Hastings as the right fit

Pete Kortum of Grand Island is hoping to finish his 38-year law enforcement career in Hastings as the city’s next police chief.

Becoming chief is the next step in Kortum’s career, but he didn’t want to be chief in just any city. He had to make sure it was the right fit.

He considered three different open chief positions in Nebraska before deciding to compete for the job in Hastings. He only submitted one application.

“Before I applied, I wanted to know it was a town I wanted to go to,” he said in his soft-spoken and friendly tone. “We discussed it and decided we wanted to stay in central Nebraska.”

Kortum, 60, is a captain with the Grand Island Police Department.
