Going the extra mile

A lot of work goes into preparing the Smith Softball Complex for the state softball tournament, but for the most part that effort isn’t any different from the rest of the season.

In the days leading up to the first games this morning, city employees Creighton Hamburger, David Dedrick and Thomas Roudebush-Torske erected extra bleachers, set up the ticket booths and hung the Nebraska School Activities Association billboards just inside the complex that list past championship softball teams. With help from Hastings High School maintenance employees, they also installed a wind screen only used during the state tournament.

“It’s just those few extra things that come in,” said Hamburger, complex maintenance supervisor. “Otherwise it’s really the same.”

Hamburger and Dedrick work full time at the complex from the beginning of March through the end of November and then wherever they are needed in the city during the winter.
