New state rankings draw ire from HPS

Hastings Public Schools officials believe a new school ranking system being unveiled by the Nebraska Department of Education this fall has no educational purpose.

School districts across the country are assessed and categorized on a national level based on student performance in several areas.

Now states are giving further individual assessments of schools, as well.
The state education department is now unveiling the Nebraska Performance Accountability System, or NePAS, which will assess and rank all schools in the state.
Section I will rank four sections of the district and compare them with the other 248 school districts in the state. The breakdown will be grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and then a composite of grades 3-12.
