Previously defeated rezone measure passes

It took more than a decade to rezone the vacant lot in the 500 block of North Sixth Avenue, but owner Jerry Goebel finally got the votes to accomplish it Monday night.

Although the presiding city council in 2000 defeated the rezone measure and the current city council initially defeated the issue at its Aug. 26 meeting, a voting question brought the issue back to the table Monday and the council voted 5-3 to rezone the property from R-1 single family residential to R-P3, multiple family residential planned district.

"It was a lively debate. It's not often that a council goes two or three meetings on an issue, and I think that's a good thing," said Councilman Phil Odom, who voted against the rezone.
