The extreme curb makeover in downtown Hastings is drawing to a close.
For the last three weeks, crews have been digging up dozens of old curbs and pouring new ones.
With curbs and some sidewalks in the downtown area showing significant wear and tear from snow plows and weather factors, the city of Hastings decided it was time to replace them.
City Engineer Dave Wacker said snow, snow removal, heating and cooling all contribute to wear and tear on the concrete. Some curbs were so bad, he said, that parts were broken off.
The $120,000 project was budgeted for 2012 and is being paid for by taxes, including the wheel tax and sales tax. Werner Construction of Hastings, which originally was awarded the contract, subcontracted the work to Rupert Construction of Omaha.
Wacker said a similar project was done about eight years ago, but not to the extent of the current project.
“Periodically, you have to do this,” he said.
