Wind wreaks havoc on trees

Homeowner Gary Morris and Rod Davis of Davis Custom Tree
Service haul away chopped  pieces of a 35-40 foot tree
branch Thursday night that fell from the Hackberry tree in
Morris' front yard at 1204 W. 12th Street earlier that
morning.

The snapping sound left little doubt as to what had just happened.

Homeowner Gary Morris saw the limb on his hackberry tree was compromised by extreme winds Wednesday afternoon. He figured it would eventually fall. He just wasn’t sure when. Just before noon Thursday he had his answer.

“I knew right away,” he said. “I was sitting in there playing cards on the computer and I heard it crack and go. It was a big one.”

Fortunately for Morris, the branch fell away from his home, falling harmlessly across his front lawn and coming to rest just beyond the curb line near the corner of 12th Street and Saunders Avenue.

“That would have taken out the roof,” Morris said. His first thought: “Who am I going to call to get rid of it?”

Rod Davis of Davis Custom Tree Service responded to Morris’ problem. Between the two of them, they had cleared a goodly portion of the tree by early evening.

“I had one that blew down on Wednesday, three calls yesterday, and none today,” Davis said this morning. “Most of it was just small stuff. It wasn’t bad.”
