Banner removal causes controversy

SMITH CENTER, Kan. — What was to be a cosmetic decision intended to make the gymnasium less cluttered at a high school that has won about 100 state and league championships has created some controversy.

Smith Center Unified School District 237 consolidated 85 individual small, felt banners into three large vinyl banners stating the years for Redman league championships during summer 2012. There is one each for all boys and all girls sports programs as well as one listing state runner-up teams.
