Council discusses extending bar hours

Hastings City Council members are as divided as local bar owners on the idea of extending bar hours in the city to 2 a.m.

“I visited with several bar owners and while none of them were opposed, most would only use it on New Year’s and St. Patty’s,” said Councilwoman Ginny Skutnik.

At a work session Tuesday, the City Council discussed a request to allow businesses licensed to serve alcohol to remain open until 2 a.m. City code currently allows businesses to serve alcohol until 1 a.m.

The request for this discussion came from Jesus Hernandez, owner and operator of The Caribbean Bar and Grill at the corner of Second Street and Baltimore Avenue, who presented the city with a letter and signatures of business owners and citizens who supported the change.
