Homes found for most impounded dogs

Heartland Pet Connection takes in more dogs than cats, but dogs are also more frequently reclaimed by their owners or adopted.

In the shelter’s last fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, the shelter took in 595 dogs and 362 cats.

Fifty-three percent of dogs coming into the shelter, 314 in all, were reclaimed by their owners, while 20 percent, or 119 dogs, were adopted.

Of the 362 cats taken in, 58 were adopted and 24 were reclaimed.

HPC Executive Director Lynn Jasnoch said a quarter of the cats — or 102 of them — were feral cats, have had no human contact and support themselves in the wild.
