Council approves code changes for firework stands

Although city staff have always had a system for monitoring the sale of fireworks in Hastings, they want to know more about the temporary stands put up each summer — where are they placed, how do they relate to their environment and do they pose any danger?

Several changes to the city code addressing these concerns were approved by the City Council at its regular meeting Monday.

Applications for firework tents must now be submitted to the city by June 15 each year and applications must contain "a detailed site plan," showing the scaled dimensions of the stand, the surface the stand will sit on, and its relation to other structures, among other requirements.
