last year in downtown Hastings.
Veterans from all branches of the military will be celebrated downtown when the seventh annual Veteran’s Parade rolls through Hastings at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Sponsored by the Hastings Free Masons and Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce, the parade has continued to grow in popularity for the past eight years.
The parade is not exclusive to Adams County residents; anyone can join the parade ranks as long as he or she is a veteran.
This year’s grand marshal, World War II veteran Reinold Schutte of Hastings, has participated in the parade since its first year in 2005.
Schutte served in the 87th Infantry Division which was part of General Patton’s 3rd Army. He received three battle stars during his time in the service, including: Battle of the Bulge, Battle of the Rhine and Battle for Europe.
“This cap of mine, they tell me to keep wearing it because we don’t want to forget World War II,” he said. “When I wear it, I have a lot of people come up and thank me.
“Just the other day I had a little gal come up and hand me this little card.”
The card had a message thanking him for his service.
